In Tibetan Buddhist art and philosophy, mostly showing as protector Dharma pal is not only physical safety, it speaks to the safeguarding of truth, wisdom, and the path toward enlightenment. Those four Dharma protectors, often known as the four Heavenly kings, who standing at the boundaries of the world, watching over the teachings of the Buddha and maintaining cosmic balance.

In the symbolic universe of Buddhist thought, each direction is entrusted to a guardian who protects not only space, but the deeper principles of spiritual life. To the South stands Virudhaka, As one of the Four Heavenly kings, Virudhaka whose role goes far beyond that of a simple protector. And he stands as a fierce protector of the Dharma, embodying strength, just, and the unwavering duty to uphold moral order.

His name, often translated as “the one who causes growth,” carries a meaning that may seem gentle at first. The south, often associated with expansion and progress, reflects the unfolding of life and the consequences of human actions. In South direction traditionally associated with expansion and development. Virudhaka ensures that growth does not become chaotic or misguided. He is ruling southern guardian as protector of the Dharma, embodying strength, justice, and the unwavering duty to uphold moral order. And he is known as leader of the Kumbhandas, a class of powerful beings often associated with the earth and physical strength.

In thangka paintings and wall of the temple painting, Virudhaka is typically shown wearing armor and holding a sword. Which symbolizing his ability to cut through ignorance, falsehood, and harmful behaviour. The sword he carries is not a weapon of war, but symbol of wisdom in action. The ability to cut trough ignorance, falsehood, and harmful behaviour. That is way he is know as guardian of justice also.

Such thangkas are believed to bring spiritual protection, balance, and stability to practitioners and to the places where they are displayed, such as monasteries and temples.
