In Buddhist cosmology, the “Four Dharma Protectors” most often refers to the Four Great Kings—guardian deities who stand watch over the four directions of the world. In Sanskrit they are called the Lokapālas, and in Tibetan tradition they are deeply woven into temple art, especially in thangka painting. They are not Buddhas, but powerful protectors who uphold the Dharma (the teachings of the Buddha) and guard both sacred spaces and sincere practitioners.
Virupaksha is associated with clear vision and insight. He is often shown holding a serpent or a stupa, symbolizing deep awareness and spiritual perception. His name suggests “all-seeing,” and his role is to watch over the world with wisdom. Protection here comes from awareness—seeing things as they truly are.
In Tibetan Buddhist cosmology, Virupaksha’s name can be understood as “the one who sees in many ways”. Virupaksha, is one of the “Four Dharma Protectors” who stand watch over the Guardian of the west direction, embodying a unique form of protection. His ability is perceive truth beneath appearances, to recognize illusion, and to understand the hidden nature of reality. In this sense, Virupaksha protects not only the physical world, but also the clarity of the mind. He is wearing armor like a warrior and holding a snake or rope (symbol of control over negative forces), and showing strength and alertness.
Such thangkas are believed to bring spiritual protection, balance, and stability to practitioners and to the places where they are displayed, such as monasteries and temples.
